Şişecam Bets Big on India, Bringing European-Grade Coating Tech to Local Glass Production

The Turkish glass major’s fourth global coater line — after Bulgaria, Italy, and Türkiye — signals a long-term play on India’s construction and auto boom

Turkish glass and chemicals conglomerate Şişecam is deepening its footprint in India with the introduction of a magnetron sputtering coater – a precision coating technology the company has previously deployed only at three other facilities worldwide, in Bulgaria, Italy, and Türkiye. India now becomes the fourth.

The move slots neatly into the broader story of global manufacturers repositioning toward India. With the country’s expanding middle class, young workforce, and manufacturing momentum under the “Make in India” push, Şişecam’s leadership frames the investment less as an isolated project and more as a long-horizon bet on where global glass demand is heading.

Riding India’s Construction and Auto Wave

The timing lines up with real sectoral tailwinds. India’s flat glass market has been expanding on the back of construction activity, automotive growth, and rising demand from white goods manufacturers — and increasingly, that demand is skewing toward energy-efficient glazing as green building codes tighten across the country.

Magnetron sputtering is the technology that makes much of that efficiency possible. The process deposits ultra-thin metallic and oxide layers onto glass surfaces to control heat transfer and light performance — the same underlying science behind the Low-E coatings now standard in premium commercial glazing. Şişecam’s new line is built to support complex multi-layer coating stacks, positioning it to compete at the high-performance end of the Indian market rather than commodity glass.

What the Facility Will Produce

According to the company, the new coater will manufacture glass built around several priorities:

  • Energy performance: coatings engineered to cut energy consumption and meet green building benchmarks used across India, Europe, and other markets Şişecam serves
  • Climate durability: formulations designed to hold up across India’s varied climatic zones, from coastal humidity to inland heat
  • Design flexibility: an expanded palette of colors and finishes aimed at giving architects more latitude on residential and commercial projects
  • R&D-backed development: product development supported by Şişecam’s network of 25 research laboratories worldwide

The Bigger Picture

The India investment is Şişecam’s latest step in a coater expansion cycle that’s added capacity in three European markets over recent years. Company messaging suggests this isn’t a one-off — further Indian investment is reportedly under active consideration as the company works toward a stated ambition of ranking among the world’s top three producers across its core businesses.

For context on scale: Şişecam currently runs 43 production facilities across 13 countries, employs more than 22,000 people, and posts annual revenue of roughly $6 billion. The company ranks among the global top five in flat glass, glass packaging, and soda ash production, and holds the number one position globally in glassware.

Founded in Türkiye in 1935, Şişecam has grown from a domestic industrial project into one of the only companies operating across every major segment of the glass value chain — flat glass, glassware, packaging, chemicals, automotive glass, fiber, and adjacent businesses like mining and energy recycling.
